The Canadian Nutcracker That Swings!

A uniquely Canadian story about friendship, multiculturalism and inclusivity,
with a high-tech moral, a comedic villain, and a Mountie Nutcracker

Story by Adrian Cho, Artistic Director, Impressions in Jazz Orchestra and
Deborah Ann Taylor, Pastor, Mount Calvary Lutheran Church

This unique tale tells the story of Sudanese refugees Clara and her mother Ashanti who emigrate to Ottawa a few days before Christmas. They settle in a multicultural neighbourhood in Ottawa and receive an invitation to a local Christmas eve party. At the party, Clara and Ashanti quickly make friends. When all the children are playing together, Clara is given the opportunity to use a computer for the first time. The other children show Clara all the wonderful things that computers can be used for but one of the parents cautions Clara on the dangers of computers and specifically, the dangers of meeting strangers on the Internet. Shortly after this lesson, Santa arrives at the party and the children are each given presents with Clara receiving a Mountie Nutcracker - The Canuckracker.

Later that night after the party has ended and all the children and their parents have returned to their respective houses, a mysterious figure appears from the computer. He is "Oclupaca," a bumbling thief (sort of a cross between Zorro and a clown) who has come to steal the children's presents. Oclupaca does exactly that and returns back into the computer from which he appeared. The children follow in pursuit and find themselves in the mystical world inside the computer where they attempt to locate Oclupaca and retrieve their presents.
